What is an Apprenticeship?

If you’re keen to get into the world of work and learn key skills on the job, then an apprenticeship could be the perfect route to kick start your digital career. It can take from one to four years to complete, depending on the qualification, and involves part-time study at SCIoT alongside working with an employer.

There’s no upper age limit to study an apprenticeship, so it’s perfect if you’re just leaving school or college, looking to make a career change or to develop in your current role.

What apprenticeships are on offer?

The range of apprenticeships within the digital, technology and IT sectors is always growing. SCIoT currently offers these apprenticeships:

Undergraduate students at SCIoT

An Information Communication Technician provides support to internal and external customers, helping them to be productive when using technology to do their own jobs, by using tools to problem solve and trouble shoot non routine problems. The Information Communication Technician sets people up on systems and provides support when they need it, rectifying issues to maintain the organisations productivity.

Reading and Oxford campuses.

Potential job roles

Support Technician, Help Desk Support, First Line Support, Office IT Technician, IT Support Analyst, IT Support Officer, Maintenance Support Technician, Data Centre Support Technician, Cyber/ Security Support.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a suitable position and hold a minimum five GCSEs (or equivalent) grade 9-4 (A*-C) to include English and Maths on Initial assessment. If not already achieved, you will have to achieve Level 2 English and Maths and take the test for Level 2 prior to taking your end-point assessment.

Career benefits

A Data Analyst collects, organises and studies data to provide business insight. Data analysts are typically involved with managing, cleansing, abstracting and aggregating data, and conducting a range of analytical studies on that data. They work across a variety of projects, providing technical data solutions to a range of stakeholders and customers. They document and report the results of data analysis activities making recommendations to improve business performance.

Data Analyst, Data Manager, Data Scientist, Data Modeller, Data Architect, Data Engineer.

Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this might include five GCSEs and/or A levels; a Level 3 Apprenticeship; other relevant qualifications and experience; or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths.

Cyber Security student

As a Software Developer you could be building and testing simple, high-quality code across front end, logic and database layers. A Software Developer would typically be working as part of a larger team, in which they would have responsibility for some elements of an overall project.

Potential job roles

Web Developer, Application Developer, Mobile App Developer, Games Developer, Software Developer.

Entry requirements

Individual employers will set the selection criteria, but this is likely to include A levels; a Level 3 apprenticeship or other relevant qualification; relevant experience and/or an aptitude test with a focus on functional maths.
