New scholarship launched to promote diversity in the tech sector in Oxfordshire
Activate Learning and South Central Institute of Technology in partnership with Webexpenses are excited to announce the launch of a new tech scholarship programme in Oxfordshire.
The vision of the South Central Institute of Technology (SCIoT) is to increase the representation of underrepresented groups within the digital and technology sectors.
The ELMO Webexpenses Scholarship is open to prospective students including BAME, disabled, female and those living in low participation postcode areas (POLAR).
This dedicated scholarship award for higher education learners is sponsored by Webexpenses and aims to make programmes more accessible, diverse and representative of the modern society we live in.
This scholarship will cover 100% of the total cost of the tuition fees (£6,165) for Level 4 HNC Digital Technologies programmes at City of Oxford College – Technology Campus in Blackbird Leys.
Supporting underrepresented learners in the tech sector in Oxfordshire
Speaking about the launch of the new scholarship, Adam Reynolds, CEO of Wepexpenses, said: “As an Oxfordshire based employer in the tech sector, Webexpenses has partnered with Activate Learning for a number of years offering good quality work experience and internships.
“It has always been our aim to help equip students for working life and this summer we will be welcoming our first Webexpenses employee from the Activate Learning alumni.
“We are proud to announce that this year we are also launching the ELMO Webexpenses Scholarship.
“The scholarship is open to students in underrepresented groups. With young people aged over 19 more likely than other age groups to feel that either they do not have the skills to work in technology or that there are not many tech jobs around, we’re hopeful that through this scholarship we will attract more students from underrepresented groups onto the course and ultimately into a career in software development.”
Giving access to higher education
Bill Hunt, Director of Higher Education at Activate Learning, is the person responsible for setting up the scholarships for the SCIoT hub in Oxford.
He said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to create this scholarship alongside Webexpenses that will cover the whole course cost for higher level qualifications within the SCIoT in Oxford.
“The SCIoT vision is something that we want to help to achieve and hopefully there will be people out there who will now be able to access higher education that previously wouldn’t have been able to.”
Applications for the new scholarship are live until the deadline on Friday 8 July 2022 and open to those who meet the necessary criteria for September 2022 entry.
