This Higher National qualification, designed for individuals with a background in STEM, develops professional and technical skills through units such as Engineering Design and Mechatronics, and offers pathways to employment or further education in engineering.
What will I do?
This Qualification is mapped to the Engineering Manufacturing Technician Occupational Standard.
The Units Studied are:
Unit 4001: Engineering Design
Unit 4002: Engineering Maths
Unit 4004: Managing a Professional Engineering Project
Unit 4006: Mechatronics
Unit 4008: Mechanical Principles
Unit 4014: Production Engineering for Manufacture
Unit 4017: Quality and Process Improvement
Unit 4020: Digital Principles
Whilst studying on the course you will conduct both group and independent research tasks and complete projects on different areas of engineering such as project management and project engineering.
You can expect to develop your skills and knowledge of manufacturing processes, fluid power and introduce methods such as Lean and Quality Improvement/Assurance.
Alongside this you will grow your skills in engineering mathematics, design and application of engineering science, meaning your skillset will be up to date with the current industry standards.

The HNC course is for those who want to enhance their career as an engineer.
This course offers a strong sector-related emphasis on developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours associated with the relevant Occupational Standard.
Students applying for this course shall have a proven background in a STEM-related subject/workplace. You should be prepared to complete academic work both within a formal college environment and whilst working independently/with your peers to successfully engage with the course content.
Similarly, this is a pathway for those looking to progress onto a Higher National Diploma, BEng or BSc.
What’s next?
Upon successful completion of this course, you can enrol on the HND* in Engineering and gain a Level 5 qualification. Alternatively, you could seek employment in the industry in a junior position. Your tutors will support you in this and advise you on any applications.
*Successful enrolment on the HND will be based on performance on the HNC.
The level of entry into any subsequent degree will be based on your outcome and profile on the HND and the ongoing university entry requirement. Final year top-up cannot be guaranteed.
